The story of infamous Persian king Mahmud of Ghazni whose persistence to invade is talked about even after a 1000 years. Its not just Ghazni or its not just kings that have succeeded by extraordinary Persistence. Take trees for example. They don’t give up making new leaves every spring and they do it for decades, sometimes for centuries. Persistence, truly is the essence to succeed. But what about those who succeed within the first few times or even the first time? Is that down to just luck? But how can some be lucky all the time? Isn’t that just against the laws of nature? May be its down to ability and knowledge? The answer, I think lies in desperation. How many times have we all thought “this is my last opportunity. After this i will give up” and emerged successful? I can say with confidence that has worked out more than any other strategy or plan i have devised, in order to succeed. By dedicating ourselves to a cause, we learn from our repeated failures, while with desperation we come under tremendous pressure that we sometimes can’t even logically think, let alone learn. So, how does it work? How could possibly desperation – a human emotion – help us achieve more than what systematic planning could do? A creationist, who sees everything in this world as the will of god would say that god possibly understands desperation more than anything else and gives a helping hand. A rationalist, who seeks reasoning behind every thought, might say that we subconsciously gather help and resources when we are desperate and that subconscious planning helps us achieve more than what we plan and execute. To me though, the reason is of second nature. Clearly, desperation seems to have a special place in the success map. But i think the price comes with an “If” clause. Desperation needs to be natural and should be a true occurrence rather than self-perceived pity. A naturally occurring desperation definitely seems to hold the key for success!
Ever thought about how people are managed around the world? Enter a Japanese office on a busy morning and you would see people dictating orders and many more taking them. The rule of managing people in japan is different from elsewhere. The Japanese tend to follow a very strict hierarchy and have clear distinction on job profiles for everyone. Every office has a very clear organizational chart and there are strict protocols to follow. For example, to use someone’s help you first need to talk to his/her superior and get their approval. Things don’t change massively across south Asia – the authority and hierarchy are still a fundamental part of a group – be it official or social. You will notice authoritative tones flying all around the office and orders are given and orders are executed. This style of managements has high efficiency in getting mundane jobs done, because there is no confusion. People have to listen to their superiors and execute the task. Simple. But the issue with this style of management is when creativity is required in the workplace. Suppose a problem needs a solution, this authoritative style of “do what i say” management doesn’t always work. Bearing this in mind and moving to western cultures, we see a distinct change in the way groups are organised. The very strict organisational chart slowly dissolves into thin air. People somehow seem to know what they are supposed to do and they don’t have to be told anymore. The climate in a western office appears to be more relaxed and i am not sure if i would agree that efficiency is sacrificed for this cause. There is very less interference into others’ time and people just don’t exist as a group. Looking at these two distinct ways of managing people, and both of them having proven themselves to be successful over the years, one tends to wonder which is the best way. The western style of management that exists today is a by-product of forward thinking and is practised only for the past few centuries or so. Until before then, every single culture, be it east or west, was ruled authoritatively by a king or a queen with strict hierarchical rules. But looking at the improvement in quality of life that the western method of managing has brought in for all of us in the world, forces us to think that is perhaps the best way of management to breed creativity, which is the most important ingredient in today’s business. The question that springs to mind at this point is what good would creativity do for well established jobs like manufacturing? Semco, a company in Brazil, toyed with this idea of letting people do what they wanted to, in their manufacturing plant. There was chaos, as expected. But after a few weeks of not knowing what to do, because there is no one to tell them what to do, people started organising themselves into groups. The self-formed groups worked towards a common goal and they were self-motivated. They set their work timings and came up with a work target. And Semco today is a very successful enterprise. Losing authority is not a very comfortable thing. It is something that many leaders hate, because it makes them weak. But if everyone is working towards a common goal then that is the most efficient method to achieve. As much as we want followers, we need creative leaders, who are co-ordinators, to solve problems facing humanity.
Emotional intelligence is a wonderful gift for people who naturally possess it. To be fair, all of us have some emotional intelligence(EI), only that most of us don’t really use it. The power of Emotional Intelligence is so very diverse and it always comes with a set of other related qualities. So, EI is not just about controlling your own and understanding others’ emotions. Its advantages go beyond what one can list. For example, in day to day life, a person with high EI will be able understand if a person walking towards him could be a serious threat or not, just by looking at their body language. It is the by-product of EI rather than IQ that helps us to compute such decisions. EI is every where! At work, EI helps understand what sort of a personality your boss is, even before people tell it out to you. Its not just the boss, EI helps understand the attributes of your colleagues and the work environment very easily and helps you to channelise and project yourself to suit the work environment. Its not just work, EI helps when it comes to maintaining relationships with friends and family. EI basically helps to understand people regardless of how they try and portray themselves. Yet another unique aspect of possessing high emotional intelligence is that you never make enemies unless you want to. Emotional Intelligence helps understand what the person you are talking to needs and if you want to avoid any difference of opinion, then you can just play on their side, saying yes and avoiding any conflicts. I personally felt hairdressers / barbers have one of the highest EI in our society. Most of them can talk about a variety of topics to their clients and they do so without causing any rift in their clients’ ideologies. Use it to better yourself! But it is not just about understanding others. It is a very handy tool to look into yourself and succeed. With Emotional Intelligence, you can dissect a situation that has happened in the past and can analyse it from various points of view. For example, let us say, you were asked to negotiate a contract with your customer and you failed. The first emotion after a failure is anger and frustration on yourself. You might immediately think, You did horribly bad in the negotiation meeting. You had no answers to the customers questions and had no convincing points to successfully negotiate. And it is exactly at this point, emotional intelligence can be used to understand what went wrong and what can be improved. EI can help you reason out by swapping positions. So you then think, Fair enough, i agree i didn’t do very well. But i had no prior information on this subject. I had just a day to discuss this topic with the relevant person. On top of this, this is not my normal job. I just filled in someone else’s position. By doing so, you have made yourself get rid of the guilt that everything was your fault. On top of it, you have a few learning for the next time. You will need to prepare a bit better, may be talk to relevant people more the next time. It is always better to make life easier by understanding what went wrong and keep moving ahead. To sum it up… One of the best ways to start developing Emotional Intelligence is to become more aware and conscious of the surrounding environment. With this newly acquired sensitiveness, Emotional Intelligence will start growing on its own. It is unfortunate that EI is heavily under estimated by our society. But the truth is, people who have been successful in their life will for sure possess high levels of emotional intelligence. Because, without it, going up is not just difficult, but close to impossible!
A while ago, i wrote about the top ten things that none of us should do at work. Today, i have a list of 10 things that are generally considered good for the society, but never work in practice. I have been a victim of these things in the past. These are definitely tried and tested points that everyone of us need to avoid to be successful, especially at work. Disclaimer: These topics should be taken with a pinch of salt – meaning they are not hard and fast. Whilst most of the time these rules help, sometimes they can go against us. It really depends on the environment and type of people we deal with everyday. 1. Too much empathy Empathy is understanding others’ situation and circumstances. It is good and very much required in order to have a successful team, but too much empathy does not favor us. With lots of empathy, we tend to adjust very well to other’s mistakes while they might start taking advantage of our good heart. 2. Criticism even when asked for Time after time, people ask for criticism. They say they are very much looking forward to hearing negative comments about themselves. Companies organise 360 degree feedback on managers to understand their pitfalls. But humans (especially a professional in a higher job grade) cannot take criticism just like that. Even though they ask for it, most of the time they are expecting some good words and not really bad ones. 3. Being fair with all A good deed in theory, a bad way of life in practise. Ideally we want to be fair to all and help them with their troubles. But people often take advantage of this good thought. The best way to deal with people, especially at work, is to mirror them. Just give back what they give you. In my theory, this is not unfair at all. By behaving the way they behave to us, we at least can avoid any possible humiliation. 4. Playing by the rules of humanity Most good people believe that every human should be respected irrespective of his / her personal attributes like colour, position, money, etc. But unknown to mankind we all still live in groups and associate and disassociate ourselves with people based on values and ideals we possess. This being true, there is no point in trying to follow all the rules of humanity in a workplace. After all, this world is a competitive place today and there are many ready to punch the moment we duck. Beware! 5. Challenging your boss Almost all organisations encourage their employees to challenge each other on ideas and views. Though they like to advocate this fact, very few really take it seriously. Even if the company takes it seriously, employees may not. Especially whoever is above the job grade will find it extremely difficult if he /she is challenged. Instead of finding yourself in a puddle of hatred, try and avoid direct challenges with seniors. 6. Being level headed When i was young, my parents insisted i stayed low headed despite what i had achieved and i believe this quality has stayed on with me. But with such a gem of a quality, i found it to be very difficult to grow up in career. Most people who were appraising me were not capable of understanding my potential by my actions. Instead they expected me to talk about myself. I found it very hard to fight this habit and talk about what i can do, but after i started doing it, i have grown steadily. Ironical, but true! 7. Accepting weakness People who are really capable of achieving wonderful things are always ready to accept their weaknesses. They do this because they know what they are capable of doing and also because they want to go further in their career. But such people are few and far in this society. We are dominated by people who grade and brand others based on what they are told. So never accept weakness. Instead talk to your friend or someone in your family to identify your weakness and work on it without disclosing it. If you don’t tell it, many will never know it. 8. Demanding equality The human society thrives on inequality. Never in the history of mankind, there has been equality and there will never be. We all have to get used to this fact and live with it. So there is no point in expecting equality in the workplace either. There will always be favorites and not-so-favorites. If you one of the not-so-favorites, don’t be disheartened by it. Push for equality if situation favours or else simply accept it! 9. Being truthful at all times Common sense says that lying is not something that should be encouraged within the society. But being truthful at all times can works out against us. Where truth has to be withheld, it has to be done, especially if truth would cause more problems and issues. 10. Views, views and views People ask for views but never care about what is told. Being genuine, we would like the person to pay heed and accept what is told, but again that is the way life is. If asked for a view, try and be impartial and disassociate yourself as much as possible from the view. That way it is easy to handle it if it gets criticised or rejected due to other political reasons.
Success is definitely not luck. Be it on a personal level on how to lead a successful married life or on the financial aspect of it or even at work as a leader there are a number of things to learn and consider in order to be successful. Sometimes luck helps to achieve unseen level of success, but is not the only way to be successful. I have personally written a number of articles on how to be successful over the last year or so and i felt i should put together these articles into a concise list of 10 most important attributes that would help us all to be successful. 1.Know to Sell your product Do you have a wonderful product? It could be a special talent or an idea. But if you have one, then you already have a head start. http://www.karthikrajg.com/2009/10/things-to-remember-while-marketing-yourself/ 2. Be assertive Are you really assertive enough to lead a team or to get your ideas through? Assertiveness is one of the most important qualities that can make you a great success or a great failure. http://www.karthikrajg.com/2009/10/learning-to-be-assertive/ 3. Stay ahead of the competition Having a good product and tasting success with it is one thing. But maintaining success and building on it is another. To make sure you succeed every time, you have to know where your competition are and need to stay ahead of them. http://www.karthikrajg.com/2009/12/staying-ahead-of-the-game/ 4. Concentrate on one thing at a time Jugglery is an art but is seldom a good trick when it comes to business. It is a well proven fact that people who concentrate on one thing are highly likely to succeed than people who try and do too many things. http://www.karthikrajg.com/2009/12/one-thing-at-a-time/ 5. Perseverance and Self-belief The only things that can guarantee success are perseverance and self belief. There are many successful people in this world who have failed more than anybody else and it is only their perseverance and self belief that helped sail the uncharted waters and to reach shores safely. http://www.karthikrajg.com/2010/02/fable-eagle-or-crow/ 6. Ready to take criticism Perseverance is no good if we do not learn from our past mistakes and criticisms. Every successful man would have been criticised at some point for his abilities or work and the best take it sportively and learn to utilise for their own benefit. http://www.karthikrajg.com/2010/03/how-to-positively-utilise-criticisms/ 7. Be ready to quit Following on the lines of perseverance, it is extremely important to know where to stop trying as well. There is no point in foolishly trying the same thing again and again when the idea by itself is bad. http://www.karthikrajg.com/2009/12/a-secret-recipe-to-success/ 8. Be level headed and respect others Taking success normally and learning to live with it without making a big deal about it is an art. Very few people stay level headed and continue to respect others. http://www.karthikrajg.com/2009/12/why-many-leaders-dont-succeed/ 9. United we win All of us know the importance of unity. To be successful, you need the right contacts and more importantly the right kind of people to work for you. http://www.karthikrajg.com/2009/09/team-work-works/ 10. Finally, success is how you define Success to one could mean failure to the other. It all is dependent on the persons mindset. The real winners are definitely the ones who really make a difference in this world. http://www.karthikrajg.com/2010/02/the-real-winners/ Related posts:Four phases of successStaying ahead of the gameA secret recipe to success

Timo: Ever heard about Intelligence Quotient? Jarmo: Of course, yes. Timo: Yeah i thought so. I think most of us would have!! Timo: OK then, how about emotional quotient? Jarmo: Sounds vaguely familiar. Though don’t know what that means. Timo: Alright. How about this – Spiritual Quotient? Jarmo: Spiritual…what? This dialogue between two colleagues isn’t that uncommon. Our society has placed an extraordinary importance, in the past, on Intelligence Quotient, that we all think, the one with he highest IQ is the best. Actually, as you might have guessed already, it isn’t the case and certainly it isn’t something that employers look for while they choose a new candidate. Most employers look at a potential candidates personality by looking at 4 important attributes – Intelligence Quotient, Emotional Quotient, Spiritual Quotient and Ego. Intelligence Quotient: A straight forward number that explains how intelligent our brain is. It assess how good one’s critical thinking is and how quickly one can think of technical solutions to unknown problems as and when they arise. I take that most of us are aware of this term and there isn’t much i need to explain about it. Emotional Quotient: It is defined as a Quotient, though it isn’t a number. Most of the times, Emotional quotient is judged by psychometric analysis, by providing the candidate with a list of questions, some of which could be repetitive, and assessing the responses to those questions. The responses can be grouped into 3 or 4 groups, that provides, for example, a high, medium or low EQ rating. What actually is measured correlates to the ability to be responsive to others and to work as a team. It shows if a person would lose for a bigger cause and be assertive when needed. The interest here is understand if the personality would suit the job and how the person would possibly respond and react during a crisis. Some people with very high IQ sometimes showcase very less EQ and this is perfectly normal. Spiritual Quotient: Spiritual Quotient on the other hand is an instrument to showcase deeper understanding about the self and the environment. A person with questions such as “what am i doing here” and “who am i” is expected to have a higher spiritual quotient than a person who answers them saying, “I, know what i am doing here – i cut trees” and “i know who i am – i am James Carringer”. James Carringer, the tree-feller might have high IQ and possibly a good EQ, but his SQ is close to zero. A person with a high spiritual quotient is always more mature than what his peers of the same age would be. The SQ does not originate from the brain, but rather from the mind, the consciousness. In a job, a person with no or very less experience but a high SQ can easily scale the challenges and would definitely deliver as they tend to understand the bigger picture quite easily. Ego: The fourth attribute of a personality that employers may be interested in is ego. Ego has various definitions, but in modern terms, it is used to express arrogance and selfishness of a person. Ego, as it sounds, doesn’t help the organisation in most scenarios. It destroys team bonding and surely an egoistic person cannot posses very high EQ or SQ. That said, a person with very low ego will not be able to survive the rigorous business environment while dealing with clients or suppliers. A certain level of ego is required, but it is very subjective and expressed only at necessary situations. How they all link up? An interesting article from live positive compares IQ, EQ and SQ as “IQ primarily solves logical problems. EQ allows us to judge the situation we are in and behave appropriately. SQ allows us to ask if we want to be in that situation in the first place.” Many successful CEOs have commented about the use of EQ and SQ in recruitment of their candidates. Ricardo Semler, of Semco Industries, comments that when he recruits a candidate he would always look for all four of these attributes and try and evaluate them by adding up all the three quotients and then subtracting the person’s ego. It has always worked well for him and his success shows how good his ideas are. Many MBA programs from leading universities have now declared that they will have a course on EQs as a part of their curriculum. It wouldn’t be too long before they start teaching SQ as well. After all, business is not only about profit margins instead it is how we can make everyone live happily for a long time.
We all want to grow in our career over time. None of us would want to stay where we started in our career. This means getting on to the management ladder, sooner or latter. Although not all career paths are the same, people management in most of the career paths still remains fairly similar. But, people management is different from other types of management – it appears to be easy and is easy, if understood and done right. Even though most of us would end up as managers at some point, whenever i spoke to a friend about work, i used to hear “My manager is difficult to work with”. I always wondered how all managers can be difficult? I don’t believe that people change from good to bad as they move up their career. So what actually could it be? I feel it has something to do with the system – the way the world defines hierarchy and management. The system gives them more power and more responsibility as they progress in their career. Certainly, this makes sense, as we all gain experience and knowledge as we grow older. But unfortunately, the system fails to factor ego which grows along with age. So in order to be successful and to have sustained growth, young managers need to shape themselves as soon as they get on to the management train. And here are some tips to get them started.. 1. Treat everyone equally. 2. Don’t just talk. Show them in action. 3. Appreciate good ideas and actions. The most genuine people do not advertise themselves and so be aware of their ideas and appreciate them. 4. Even if the ideas/actions are not good, look for the root cause to understand where it started. 5. Remember you are the deciding authority, but you don’t have to decide all the time. 6. Respect comes when the gun stays in the holster. 7. Meet people regularly. Talk to them. 8. Infuse confidence. This only comes over time. 9. Clear the path to make progress. 10. Make them feel secure. 11. Be honest and truthful. 12. Ask Questions. Make them feel responsible. 13. Give guidance. 14. Be ready to learn. 15. Realise you are no different than them – only that your job profile is different. 16. Give them what they want and what you can. 17. Never encourage blame games. 18. Finally, trust your intuition – that is where the extra-ordinary get made! Good Luck! Related posts:10 things that never work at a workplaceWhy many leaders dont succeedHow to build a career

I have been very lucky to work with different personalities and managers in the past, ranging from the most idealistic manager to the most 'i-should-not-grow-up-to-be-like-him' type. This experience has taught me very valuable lessons on how to handle people who work for me. In today's situation, there are many examples of where people graduate out of a business school with very high grades and after a few years of being an apprentice, they transform themselves into a leader. Though management is very much intuitive, it requires some experience and a deeper understanding of psychology of the people they manage and work with, in order to be successful.

In one of my previous articles, i wrote about 5 most important attributes of a great leader. The attributes listed there are essential to rise up to the level of a great leader and differentiate a great leader from a good leader, but what does it really take to sustain it? If you ask successful leaders, most of them would agree it requires equal or far more effort to sustain their position when compared to the effort spent to reach there. So what would the most essential attributes of sustenance be? Read on… Learning – Did you do your lessons today? Jack Welch once said “An organization’s ability to learn, and translate that learning into action rapidly, is the ultimate competitive advantage.” Every word in the sentence means so much that it need not be stressed any further. No matter what the business you are in and no matter which group you lead, there is something to be learnt all the time. It is just the knowledge that puts us ahead of the competition and helps sustain growth and success. The face of reality Today’s world is more competitive than yesterday’s and it will only be more so tomorrow. Everyday, it gets harder to sustain growth and success because of the competition and associated challenges and issues. What great leaders try and do is not to shy away from problems. Instead they handle them head on. They are prepared to push even in the toughest of the situations and triumph. So, never close your eyes and assume that the problems will disappear. Instead be ready to take the bull by horns and tame it. You will have to spend some energy to fight and tackle problems, but it will be a more permanent solution. Evaluation – What’s right and what’s not! Great leaders know a lot more about themselves. They know their strengths and weaknesses and that is one of the most important attributes of any successful individual. They also tend to be very sharp and decisive about the environment and people that work for them. This ability of theirs is what enables them to select the right people to work for them. In some sense, this one single attribute tends to differentiate a good from a great leader. To stay ahead of the game, you need to know that things change all the time and so does the people who they tend to work with. To stay ahead of the competition, you need to develop this additional sense of foreseeing the business and take decisions accordingly. Leader – Set paths instead of following Create the wackiest of ideas and make sure you turn the best of those into a vision. Motivate your team to move towards your vision and make that a reality. To stay ahead of the game, you need to create a style for yourself. Apple, one of the leading brands in consumer devices, for example, they have their own style. They don’t make numerous products. They just make few. But they make them to offer the best possible customer experience. That’s where Apple have found their niche. And, in their niche, they make sure they set the trend. That’s exactly what puts them ahead of the game. Fail to succeed – Have you failed before? Ask any successful leader or a entrepreneur about his/her successes and failures and their list of failures will definitely be longer than their list of successes. Only in failure, can we all learn and grow. Failure teaches us far more than what success can teach and the one who extracts the most out of a failure and uses all his learning for the future is the one who can stay ahead of the game. True winners never fail. They just have delayed success. Perseverance – keep moving Most of us are unaware of the main factors that define success. Its nothing complicated at all. It is a simple combination of perseverance and incorporating learning from failures. To be successful, you need to try and try until you succeed. There are no short cuts to success. It is just about trying again while constantly plugging the defects or ‘holes’ in your approach. Once all the needed defects are plugged, the next attempt will definitely be success.
Being assertive in both at work and socially is very much important to have a successful daily life. Many times, just because we are not assertive enough in what we want and what we say, we tend to lose a lot. But, assertiveness doesn’t mean being arrogant. It is about expressing your views politely and clearly in order to get things done your way. Assertiveness is not a inborn quality, though some people have it in them since birth. The culture and the way we are brought up has so much impact on how assertive we generally are. But,with some effort and interest, everyone of us can easily become more and more assertive. Being assertive also helps in developing other soft skills like negotiation and management skills. So do you want to know the tips and tricks to become a more assertive person? Plough on… Be confident: The first and foremost attribute required to become a more assertive person is confidence. To become more assertive, you first need to believe in you and should be more confident about what you know and what you say. Confidence helps boost self-esteem and has an automatic effect on body language. People always listen to a confident person than to a shy person. Try looking people in their eyes and hold your head high with you chin up when you talk to others. This shows that you are confident about what you are speaking. Work on your personality: How you look and talk helps in being assertive to others. Try and dress smart and work on your appearance before meetings. Always dress for the occasion. People listen more to well groomed and smart looking people when compared to their not-so-smart counterparts. In addition to your looks, having a clear and steady voice helps in portraying yourself to be assertive. Do not try to please the other party with a soft and smiling voice when not required. The unexpected happens all the time and never panic and stumble when put in a unforeseen situation. Try to maintain a calm voice and be concise and straight. Remember, everyone knows when you react. But they can only guess when you don’t. Know the big picture: To be assertive, you need to know what you want. Understanding the big picture and focusing on the end result helps in being assertive and getting your point through. It also helps to talk yourself out of a tricky situation. A successful negotiator always knows the target he is looking for and always try and emulate the successful personalities. If you are a shy person, try and be prepared with a few phrases and comments that can be used at situations to make you look more assertive. Do not be over conscious: Do not try and think how the others would grade you or judge you. This would not let you speak out or ask questions, even if you had a brilliant idea. Have a positive mindset and assume that everyone is going to appreciate what you ask and what you suggest. Try not to react based on the subtle body language feedback you receive from others. Keep the emotions under check: Being assertive has its own perils. When both parties are equally assertive, emotions are very high and situation tends to be very stressed. Always keep a check on anger and try not to vent it at the wrong time and at the wrong person. Try to maintain a poker face – a face that shows no reaction whatsoever. In general, assertiveness should not be confused with pushiness. Assertiveness is more of a give and take when compared to being pushy. Assertiveness is about finishing a deal ideally with a win-win situation for both parties. It is not about winning a negotiation but winning it and still maintaining the relationship with the negotiator.
